The Key

Chapter One
The Birthday Present

Once there was a girl called Lucy. She had a cat called Misty and her birthday was on the 7th of December, only one week away.
The week went by and Lucy got lots of presents. In the post that day, she found a parcel from her Auntie addressed to her. Lucy opened the parcel and inside there was a box. The box was old and brown. She opened the box and inside there was an old, heavy, rusty key. What a weird present, Lucy thought.
But she was pleased: there was a note to say whatever the key opened would be hers forever.
Lucy went to bed that night dreaming of everything the key could open. Treasure, money – who knows!

Chapter Two
Breakfast

In the morning, Lucy got out of bed and saw her cat Misty sitting on the windowsill purring loudly. Lucy went downstairs for breakfast.
“Toast please, Mum,” said Lucy.
“Wait a minute, darling!” said Mum. “I’m on the phone.”
Lucy started looking around for keyholes that might fit her key. But it was no use – none could be found.
She took her key to school to show her teacher. Mrs Mongie had a machine that said how old anything was. Lucy put the key into the machine and it said the key was over 2000 years old!
But then Lucy went home and forgot all about the key and left it behind. That night she thought about it and thought it wouldn’t be safe. The next day she brought the key back from school and started searching for the keyhole, but it was no use.
Lucy went to bed and had a dream about an attic, and suddenly … she woke with a brilliant idea. She put on her dressing gown and slippers and made her way to the front door.
She went outside to the garden shed to fetch a ladder. She brought it inside into the bathroom and put it against the wall so she could get to the attic above.

Chapter 3
The Attic

Lucy pushed the trap door open. She had never been in an attic before, so she wondered what it would be like as she climbed inside. It was very dark so Lucy went to get a torch. She went back into the attic and shone the torch at everything. It was dark and dusty. Old books were piled in the corner, but at the very back there was an old chest made of black and brown leather. The key was in the pocket of her dressing gown. Maybe the key would fit in the chest’s keyhole. Lucy took out the key, and fitted it into the lock.

Chapter 4
The Chest

Lucy managed to twist the key twice round and open the chest. In the bottom was a little brown stick. Lucy was disappointed with what she found. She started waving the stick over the chest and suddenly … something started pulling her in. Only her feet were sticking out.
Soon none of her body was showing at all. She was flying through the air, colours were whirling above her head and suddenly she fell to the ground.
Misty started walking over to her.
“Misty came with me!” said Lucy. “I would have been so scared without you, Misty!”

Chapter 5
The Stick

Everything around them was made of chocolate and sweets! The flowers were strawberry cream, the grass was mint and even the sea was bubble gum. Lucy still had the stick in her hand. It was a magic stick, Lucy called it a wand.
In the distance she saw a figure, and as she was learning about World War 2 at school, she noticed it was an evacuee. Lucy walked over and said hello.
“Please help me,” said Lucy. “I don’t know where I am, and this is my cat, Misty.”
“You’re in Sweetyland,” said the girl, “and my name is Susie.”

Chapter 6
Sweetyland

Lucy told Susie about her wand.
“I am running away from the Pirates that live here on the beach,” said Susie. “I did have a really pretty sparkly dress, but they took it away from me. You’d better come back with me or they will catch you too!”
Susie had some magic shoes that made you fly and a cloak that made you invisible. She had two pairs of shoes nd two cloaks. They put them on and flew off.
They had been flying for a while when Lucy started to feel tired. So Susie told her a story about the Pirates.

Chapter 7
Flying Fun

“Once I lived with my father in a house, but he said I was too big to live with him and so he sent me away to live on my own. I came to this island by boat and I drank the bubblegum sea, but the Pirates caught me and made me a slave. They took my dress and I had to wear rags. One night I escaped on to the cliff and that’s where I met you … I really want my sparkly dress back, but I suppose I can’t get it back now.
Suddenly … “We’ve left Misty behind!” said Lucy. She waved her wand.

Chapter 8
We’ve Landed!

Misty appeared on Lucy’s lap! Down below she saw a big castle and they started to get closer, then they landed in the middle of it.
It was broken down and old, so the walls were crumbled. Lucy waved the wand, and clutching Misty in her hands she started floating up into the air.
“Come down,” said Susie, but Lucy started floating down under the cliff and on to the beach. Susie raced down on to the beach after her. Lucy was fine. And so they started walking along the beach. The sea looked so nice, Lucy waved her wand and they both appeared in swimming costumes!
Soon they got back from their swim, changed and started walking on. After a while, they got to a cave. They crept in and all around the cave there was gold, silver, diamonds and crystals.
“Ooo my gosh,” they both said together. Lucy waved her wand and suddenly in her hand there were two bags to put the treasure in. They had one bag each. And then they found a short cut back to the place they started from.
They went through slimy swamps, swaying bridges and over waterfalls.
Suddenly … Lucy woke up in bed: it was morning and beside her in another bed was Susie! Next to each of them was a bag of treasure! And they lived happily ever after.
