A Poor Little Boy

Chapter one
Jackson

It was a dark night in a dark town. In the dark, dark corner of a dark, dark room, there was a boy, a long lost boy. He was wearing a T-shirt – well, not really wearing it, because it was so ripped you could see his skin!
Knock, knock – he heard a knock at the door.
“H..h..h..hello – wh-wh-who’s there?” the boy said, worried.
“Just open the door, would ya!” yelled a voice.
“O..o..ok.”
“Are you Jackson?”
“Yes,” the boy replied.
“All I have to say is … I’m not on your roof, I’m not on the ground, help me quick, I must be found! And if something is in your path, listen to it. It may be able to help you a bit.”
The door slammed shut. Jackson thought to himself: what did he mean? “Aha – the window – it’s got to be! Wait – it’s still dark. I’ll have to wait until morning.”

Chapter 2
Next morning

“Must get to the window,” Jackson thought to himself. He got out from the torn blankets all blurry eyed, and remembering what the man had said, crept outside to the white, misty morning. Behind a tree, a man was watching the boy search by the window.
“What does he think he’s doing?” shouted the man as he stamped his foot, then hid behind a tree hoping the boy hadn’t heard him. Luckily for the man, he hadn’t.Chapter 3
Banana?
The mist began to melt away by the sun. Jackson was getting angry. He thought it was all a dream and there was no point, but then a dog came running along the road and started barking at Jackson.
He kept shouting at the dog, things like “Get lost!” and “Stop it!” But the dog didn’t go away. Then Jackson noticed that while the dog was barking he was looking up at the gutter!
“The gutter – that’s it!” and at that, Jackson gave the dog a pat as if to say thank- you. He stepped on to the pile of bricks outside the door and climbed up the drainpipe.
When he got to the top he had a frown on his face. He looked at the dog, and said: “it’s only a banana!”
“Woof!” the dog barked again. Jackson picked up the banana. “See?”

Chapter 3
The Key

The dog barked again, and ran off. Jackson was beginning to feel hungry. He looked at the banana. “I suppose it won’t do any harm if I just have one bite.” Jackson peeled the banana, thinking it would be lovely and juicy.
TING! The most unexpected thing just dropped out of the banana skin.
“It’s a key! It’s a KEY!” Jackson said excitedly. “I wonder what it will unlock?”

Chapter 4
Is it real?

Jackson ran into town. He couldn’t wait to tell everyone what he had found.
Suddenly he heard a strange banging noise coming from a passageway. As Jackson got closer and closer, the noise got louder and louder. He walked into the passageway. It looked like a cave … Jackson put out his hand to try and feel where the banging was coming from. He felt a keyhole! The door seemed to be locked – maybe the key he’d found would help!
The door opened easily. Jackson stepped in – but where was he? Something grabbed him by the leg and pulled him down. “Arrggg!” It was the dog again – and beside him was an enormous box of food, clothes, and everything the poor boy needed!
Jackson couldn’t believe it! The dog licked his hand, and wagged its tail.
Jackson wondered if he was going to wake up and find it was all a wonderful dream.
